Science denial poses obvious risks to society, in particular when it relates to serious societal threats such as climate change and infectious disease.  Climate denial slows down urgent actions to address climate change and in 2019, prior to the pandemic, The World Health Organization lists vaccine hesistancy as one of the top ten world health threats. Anti-vaxxers are already mobilizing against a future coronavirus vaccine. It is therefore essential to understand the nature of science denial and how best to counteract it. What drives science denial? What distinguishes science denial from proper doubt and critical thinking? What is the evidential value of scientific consensus? And how is one, as a lay person, to react to scientific disagreement?
